2010 Creative Teaching with Games and Simulations Workshop

There are two workshop payment options:
Please note: Space in our workshops is limited and they have sold-out in recent years. Spots are guaranteed on a first-paid, first-served basis so please expedite payment as soon as possible. Cancellation Policy: You can receive a full refund for your registration payment until June 1. After June 1, you will receive a full refund if we can replace you with a person from a waiting list. Otherwise you will receive a 50% refund for cancellation. Waiting List Policy: If the workshop is full, we'll put you on the waiting list, and let you know what your position is on the list. Computer Equipment: The workshop will take place in a Mac lab. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet with wireless capability if they wish. Professional Development Credits: In past years we have provided PDPs from the state of Massachussets -- 1 PDP per instruction hour - and we have again applied for authorization to provide PDPs. This workshop does not include enough hours to qualify for graduate credits. Hotel information: The nearest hotels are the Holiday Inn Boston-Dedham Hotel and the Fairfield-Inn Dedham & Conference Center, located 2.5 miles from Noble and Greenough School. Both are close to restaurants and a new cinema-shopping complex. More comfortable, but further away, is the Newton-Boston Marriott. Parking Information: There is free on-campus parking. Food: We will provide coffee, snacks, and sandwiches during the workshop. Registrant Survey: All participants are asked to complete a pre-workshop online survey. It will be e-mailed to those who completed both registration and payment. The survey will help us identify participant needs and objectives and may influence the topics covered during the workshop. In this one-day hands-on workshop, we'll explore the difference between a game and a simulation. We'll discover what can games teach us, and how they can be used in the classroom to create dynamic, engaging, experiential learning while emphasizing communication and collaborative skills. We'll also explore how models and simulations can be used to model real-life environments and lead us to some surprising insights about traffic jams, recycling, and surf conditions in Hawaii and Australia.
Douglas Kiang is a technology integration specialist with over 15 years of teaching experience at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. He holds a Bachelor's degree in English Literature from Tufts University and a Master's Degree in Technology in Education from Harvard. In 2007 he was one of two Massachusetts teachers to be honored as an Apple Distinguished Educator, recognizing his innovative work with iPods in the middle school curriculum. Douglas currently is a Technology Resource Teacher at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii.
